Work From Home – The Rites of Passage

Have you been considering starting a Work From Home business and have been ‘scared’ to do so?

Worrying what will your family say? Will they think you’ve “gone off your rocker?”

Or worse, that you’ll fall for a scam and loose all your savings! Not to mention the time needed to invest in a new venture, will you still have time for your family?  Will hubby still get his dinner on time?

Or if you are a single mom, when and how will you find the time to fit it all in? Will “my children” pay the price of my being busy with this new venture?

How many questions come through our mind when we are thinking of taking a new step, a new venture. The funny thing is the excuses of “why not to do” keep on coming and pile up pretty easily.

Keeping a positive and decisive mind set can be challenging but also the only thing that can keep you “sane” in those times, and these times could be called “The Rites Of Passage”.

The Rites of Passage

We often think of rites of passage as being the kind of things we go through as individuals on the road to becoming more ourselves.

But the truth is that, just as often, they are things we go through together, and especially when it comes to the family group.

There are a number of times when you and your family have to do something together you might consider a rite of passage.

It’s useful to know what these are, in part because it prepares you, and in part because it means you can understand that all families share these moments.

The Work At Home Mom

Many new and not so new moms dream of being able to start an online business because of the intense desire to stay at home to be with the family, raise the children and have the independence to manage your own time and not have a boss decide whether you can or cannot do or be somewhere else other than your job!

When you are beginning to work from home it can be a challenging time and a new experience for the whole family unit.

In this way you could say it puts the family through a rite of passage that is often not easy to go through, as it is not the usually accepted thing to do.

Mom At Home

If you are a stay at home mom and have growing children, the change of lifestyle could be confusing to them at first.

Whereas you used to either go out to work and come home in the late afternoon (or sometimes evening) to start your daily house caring chores, now you are at home ALL DAY!

The children, who have been used to have mom “care for them” when she is home, don’t understand why you are now at home but don’t have so much time to take care of them …”why are you stuck on the computer all day mom?”

This might be one of the common questions you may get.

Or the husband who doesn’t seem to understand why if you are at home all day you can’t get the laundry folded on time?

They don’t understand that you are WORKING at home, instead of working at someone else’s OFFICE, your home now is your office, and this can be confusing.

Justifying Yourself

So you find that you need to explain over and over again what it is you are doing and why it is necessary for you to devote the time necessary to build your business.

Especially at the beginning when you are not earning any money, family members may think you are on a wild goose chase wasting your time.

They may be expect you to roll in the dollar signs like the internet gurus they see on YouTube who talk about an overnight success!

This can be even more frustrating and detrimental to your mindset.

An online business at home can be said to put the entire family through a rite of passage. Once achieved, it can be of great benefit for the whole family.

You’d have more time with your family and a good if not great income to support your family and do all the things you see in the “happy family” commercials

But getting there can be challenging for all.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the rites of passage you are bound to go through as a family at some point or another.

No matter how close you are, there will be times when you all argue, and sometimes it seems as though nobody in the family is ever going to speak to anyone else again.

As serious as this can seem, and although it is always distressing when it happens, it’s important to remember that it is unlikely to last very long, and there is always going to be a solution to this particular problem.

As long as you can find a way to discuss these issues with your family in a constructive and mature manner, you will find that it is always possible to get past such issues, no matter how bad they might seem at first.

Bear this in mind, and it will not seem quite so bad on the whole. Take a look at for more on this.

Moving Home

From time to time, there will be reason to move home, either as family or with someone moving on.

In either case it can be emotional, and it’s something that you want to make sure you are as prepared for as possible.

The first thing to remember is to try and make it as easy on yourself as possible by at least getting the right kind of help for the move itself, whether that means contacting the likes of or just asking your friends and extended family.

Then you can work together as a team much more effectively, and hopefully you will be able to remain strong throughout the move as a result.

Bear this in mind, and this is one rite of passage which you won’t have to worry about upsetting the family in the long run.

Flying The Nest

At some point, one of your children will need to leave home, and this can be an especially upsetting time for any family, especially for the parents.

When this time comes, it is important to not try and hold on to them, as this could actually be damaging for them in the long run.

But instead, you should try to encourage them in their new path as best as you can, while also ensuring that you are not overly looking happy to see them go.

As a family, it is one of the great tests, but in the long run you will find that it actually makes you stronger together as a unit.

In Conclusion

Whether you are building your own online business or planning to move homes, being in acknowledgement of the difficulty can actually alleviate the difficulty itself.

Being prepared to deal with the challenges in life always make them smaller and easier to overcome.

Keep this in mind and enjoy your family journey together!

  1. Families do indeed have their rites of passages! I had to move home four times while raising a child alone, and internet marketing possibilities showed up late in those years.
I certainly encourage any mom who is thinking about working at home to start right away, and start the best way, with Wealthy Affiliate training as you recommend.
Moms do have to put down some boundaries while working at home but at least they are there for upsets or emergencies.
And hopefully dad will help with the “second shift” all working moms have.

    1. You are so right Dianne and I too know all too well how hard it is to be a single mom, trying to raise young children and work, it can be so stressful.
Definitely, Wealthy Affiliate is the go to place if you are looking to start an online business, with all the support you have from the community, it really helps keep your mindset online with your goals, and when alone, one needs that more than anything.
Yep…it would be helpful if you have a supportive partner – that is for sure.
Thank you for the comment Dianne – much appreciated =)

  2. I remembered when I first started blogging online, I had almost all the questions you mentioned going through my head. I was scared. But then I thought to myself, do I really want to work a job for the rest of my life? No, I do not. And that is enough of reason to keep me motivated to continue to work toward my goal to hopefully become financially free. I am not yet a mother. But will be in probably few years. Your article is preparing me for the possible challenges that I might face in the future. And like you said once you are prepared, challenges will become smaller and easier to overcome. I really do appreciate you sharing this information. This is definitely an article every mom should read. I wish you the best on your journey to success.

    1. Thank you Hong for your kind comment and kind words.
I am glad this article is helping you getting yourself prepared for the future.
I am sure that by the time you will be a mother, you will have your business well established and then these issues will be much smaller if non-existent!

  3. These are some great examples of family rites of passage, Orion!

In my experience, they’re not easy to go through but they’re usually so worth it. Once you’ve completed the passage (especially as a united family) it’s precious and unforgettable.

And yes, that span of time from the moment you start working from home until you actually start making money can be a true challenge.

My “secret weapon” is to always remember WHY I decided to do it and visualize the future I dream of. I also tell my family about my vision and try to make it OUR vision.

    1. Excellent point Eliane!
Making your vision your entire family’s vision is the key to continued support and encouragement, especially if and when you hit a hard time.
It is also important to try and find some friends who are on the same journey as you so to collaborate and support each other
in a world that your family might not be able to understand too much.
I mean trying to explain to them what is UX, SEO, HTML, FTP, ISP, IP, can be quite challenging..don’t you think? haha
